The success of field missions in the North depends largely on preparation. Health and safety issues for research teams visiting northern communities or isolated sites are a priority for CEN. A number of factors specific to the North must be considered when planning and preparing a northern mission:

• Remoteness and lack of road links between northern villages;
• Limited infrastructure (health services, services, businesses);
• Limited means of communication;
• Extreme and changing climatic conditions;
• Research in an Aboriginal context.

Typically, northern missions require several weeks of preparation. CEN's experienced team of researchers and professionals are on hand to advise and support CEN members in the preparation of their missions.
