What is a short-term data set?
A short-term dataset is a static dataset, i.e. it comes from projects that are only a few years old, or from completed projects. For example, thesis data or data linked solely to a scientific article.
What is a data repository?
A data repository is an organised storage space that uses metadata fields to describe data. In this way, data becomes discoverable and reusable by people and machines. Data repositories are usually used to store final data and the documentation required to understand it. However, data in a repository is not necessarily open access.
Why choose Borealis?
Borealis is a bilingual, multidisciplinary and secure Canadian research data repository supported by academic libraries and research institutions across Canada. It enables the discovery, management, sharing and preservation of research data.

Data Management Policy
The Borealis repository supports the FAIR principles for scientific data management and stewardship by ensuring that data is findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable.
Borealis allows the same dataset to be linked to multiple collections, even when they belong to different institutions. This feature is based solely on a display relationship: the dataset is neither duplicated nor split. It remains hosted and managed in its original collection, while being visible in other relevant collections.
This mechanism offers great flexibility for the cross-disciplinary promotion of research data. For example, for an interinstitutional research center such as CEN, it is possible to bring together, within a single collection, datasets distributed by several members of partner institutions, while respecting the governance and responsibility of each depositing institution.
The creation of these links between collections is not automated. To request the display of a dataset in the CEN collection, it is necessary to contact the Borealis management team at Université Laval at gdr@bibl.ulaval.ca.
