Researchers Membership : Member Categories

The information on this page is currently being updated in line with the new articles of association that were adopted at the AGM on 2 May 2025. If you have any questions, please email coordination@cen.ulaval.ca. Thank you.

The following membership categories reflect the new FRQNT and CRUL rules, and were adopted by CEN members at the general meeting held on May 2, 2025.

Centre's Members

The Université Laval is the founding and host institution of the Centre. The Centre d'études nordiques is recognised by Université Laval. As part of the host institution's research development plan, it is an operational research centre that makes a significant contribution to northern research. To maintain its status as a recognised research centre, the Centre undergoes periodic evaluation by the Commission de la recherche de l'Université Laval (CRUL). This evaluation is conducted by the Conseil universitaire de l'Université Laval.

The criteria for regular membership of the Centre are as follows:

  1. Be a career professor at Université Laval, or at a post-secondary institution in Quebec, Canada, or abroad; or be a scientist in an organisation in Quebec, or outside Quebec, who devotes at least 50% of their research activities to the Centre and whose activities are directly related to the CEN's scientific programme.
  2. Hold an individual research grant from a research funding body in Quebec or Canada, as well as at least one other individual or team research grant or contract that is also directly related to the Centre's scientific programme.
  3. Supervise or co-supervise graduate students who are student members of the Centre and whose research projects are integrated into the Centre's scientific programming.
  4. Collaborate with other regular members of the Centre;
  5. Regularly publish or co-publish the results of their research in scientific journals in line with the Centre's scientific programme, alongside students under their direction or co-direction, and alongside other regular members of the Centre.

The criteria for becoming an associate member of the Centre are as follows:

  1. Be a career professor at Université Laval or another post-secondary institution, or a scientist in an organisation in Quebec or elsewhere, who devotes at least 25% of their research activities to the Centre and its scientific programme.
  2. Hold a research grant or individual or team research contract that is also directly related to the Centre's scientific programme.
  3. Supervise or co-supervise graduate students who are student members of the Centre and whose research projects are in line with the Centre's scientific programme;
  4. Collaborate with other regular members of the Centre;
  5. Publish or co-publish the results of their research in scientific journals in line with the Centre's scientific programme, together with their students and other regular members of the Centre.

The criteria for becoming a collaborating member of the Centre are as follows:

  1. Be a career professor at a post-secondary institution, or a scientist at an organisation in Quebec, Canada, or abroad, who devotes at least part of their research activities to other regular members of the Centre;
  2. Hold at least one research grant or individual or team research contract related to the Centre's scientific programme; and
  3. Make an identifiable and recognised contribution to the Centre.

The list of collaborating members provides an overview of the Centre's network of collaborations with the private, community, and government sectors in Quebec, Canada, and abroad.

A regular member of the Centre who has retired with the status of associate or emeritus professor at their home institution, and who has made outstanding contributions to the Centre and wishes to remain involved, may obtain emeritus membership. They must apply to the Centre's Scientific Committee by submitting a letter of motivation and a curriculum vitae. This status is granted for five years after the Scientific Committee has evaluated the application. It is renewable upon application, which must be approved by the Scientific Committee.

Posthumous Emeritus Founder Member status is reserved for Emeritus Professor Louis-Edmond Hamelin, who played a key role in establishing the Centre.

* Strategic Cluster (Regroupement)

Given the Centre's inter-institutional nature, which is emphasised by the fact that it hosts an FRQ Strategic Cluster (NT Sector), a post-secondary institution in Quebec may be recognised as a partner institution of the Centre if:

  1. It has at least one researcher who is a regular member of the Centre attached to it, and
  2. It has signed an inter-university memorandum of understanding on collaboration in northern research with the host institution.

If a partner institution has at least four regular members of the Centre, the Vice-Rector for Research representative, or their delegate, becomes a member of the Centre's Strategic Council.

As part of the inter-university memorandum of understanding, a partner institution is expected to make a financial or in-kind contribution to the Regroupement in proportion to the number of co-investigators attached to it. The regroupement will inform the FRQ-NT of the contribution expected from a partner institution.

Any regular member of the Centre from the host institution or a partner institution in Quebec is automatically a co-investigator of the Regroupement.

A co-investigator of the Regroupement may also be a co-investigator of another strategic cluster recognised and funded by the FRQ NT sector, provided that their research activities differ between the two clusters in question, in accordance with the FRQ NT sector's rules.

However, a regular member of the Centre at a post-secondary institution or organisation outside Quebec is not considered a co-investigator of the Regroupement by the FRQ NT sector. The same applies to associate and collaborating members.
