Research project on snowmelt in the boreal forest

Hydro Nord - Laboratoire d'hydrologie des régions froides
Master's project in water engineering
The objective of this project is to develop a method for detecting the onset of snowmelt based on available hydrometeorological and snow measurement observations (particularly snow density) in order to improve the quality of hydrological forecasts during this critical period of the year. This approach will be validated using highly detailed local measurements of snow energy balance, soil moisture, and flow in two experimental watersheds operated by our team in the boreal forest. If conclusive, the approach could be generalized across the entire network of stations operated by Hydro-Québec. This project includes fieldwork in remote areas and data analysis.
