ADAPT - Arctic Development and Adaptation to Permafrost in Transition - is an NSERC Discovery Frontiers grant that brings together 15 laboratories across Canada and many collaborations to develop an integrated Earth systems science framework on diverse aspects related to thawing permafrost conditions in the Canadian Arctic. This new Integrated Permafrost Systems Science approach focuses on how changing permafrost and snowfall affect tundra landscapes, water and wildlife, and the implications for Northern communities and industries who depend on these resources.

NSERC

Discovery Frontiers (DF) grants are part of the NSERC Frontiers initiatives that identify and capitalize on emerging opportunities where Canada can benefit from its world-class capacity to take a leadership role in key areas of research and innovation. NSERC Frontiers address national research priorities and global challenges by supporting a small number of major new transformative and integrative activities. These initiatives will generate substantial impact from a one-time injection of funding for a defined period, addressing challenges and seizing leadership opportunities in areas of national importance. An agile, flexible and responsive approach will promote strategic partnerships at the global level. The Discovery Frontiers initiative will bring together groups of researchers that will incorporate new and emerging ideas, and combine their complementary expertise to conduct transformative, paradigm-changing research.
