Avativut - Science in Nunavik

The goal of the project "Science in Nunavik, high school students learning in relation to their territory" is to make science and technology practical and meaningful for Inuit youth by involving them in the actual data collection related to their environment. Inuit youth can contribute to long-term environmental monitoring and to a better understanding of northern ecosystems in Nunavik in the context of climate change.

You can read here a piece written about the Avativut project published in 2014 in the Makivik magazine.

CEN/Youth Fusion Partnership

As part of its mission in education and outreach, CEN has joined efforts with Youth Fusion to tackle absenteeism and lower dropout rates in Quebec by inviting students to participate in extra-curricular science activities.

A resident science project coordinator at the CEN station is involved in developing and leading activities for the local youth based on the research that is taking place at CEN, primarily in the fields of ecology, biology, geography, and meteorology. Activities at the Community Science Centre include science fairs and workshops with visiting scientists. Outdoor activities include science field trips involving canoeing, and camping, orienteering and survival skills, as well as learning about the local ecosystem and sampling techniques. These activities expose the local students to opportunities for postsecondary education and careers in the scientific disciplines. The coordinator also runs a science club for students to engage youth and foster their scientific curiosity through fun, hands-on activities.
