In order to extend our temporal and regional climate coverage of the Bylot Island area, we examined a weather database from the Environment Canada weather station of Pond Inlet (72°41’ N, 77°59’ W). This weather station is located at an altitude of 55 meters above sea-level. Data on air temperature and precipitation from the period of 1976 to 2007 were available and have been examined. Air Temperature

The yearly average temperature at Pond Inlet is –14.5°C. The average summer (June-July-August) air temperature is 4.3°C and average winter (Dec-Jan-Feb) temperature is –31.5°C.

The warmest month of the year in Pond Inlet is July, with an average of 6.3°C and the coldest month of the year is February with an average –33.7°C.

 

Precipitation

On average, Pond Inlet receives 86 mm of rain and 142 cm of snow every year. The wettest month of the year is August, receiving an average 34.1 mm of rain. October is the snowiest month with an average snowfall of 33.6 cm.
